In January 2025, we surveyed 1142 further and higher education students to understand what factors matter most when choosing a bank or building society, and which sources of information they use to make their decisions.

Key findings:

  • 87% of respondents said that technology and mobile banking is an important factor when choosing a bank or building society.
  • 57% said the environmental and/or social record of their provider is important.
  • We asked respondents what their priorities are when choosing a bank or building society. 49% of students would choose an account with slightly lower interest rates but a strong environmental or social record, compared with 30% who would opt for higher rates despite a poor record.
  • 49% of respondents reported that they use bank or building society websites to research their banking options.
