What is Mock COP?

The Mock COP campaign, supported by SOS UK, was a youth-led organisation aiming to amplify young people’s voices at the highest levels of decision-making on the climate crisis.

Worldwide many young people are frustrated with the lack of quality climate education in their schools, universities and colleges. When the COP26 conference would have been running in November 2020, over 330 youth delegates representing over 140 countries gathered online at Mock COP26.

It was a powerful statement showing the ambition and dreams of young people worldwide fighting for a fair, equal and green world. The conference culminated with a global declaration to world leaders with 18 ambitious, yet realistic policies covering 6 important themes; climate education, climate justice, climate-resilient livelihoods, physical and mental health, nationally determined contributions and biodiversity.

Impact

Campaigners have engaged world leaders with the Mock COP treaty at COPs and within their countries, including the President of Columbia, President of Ghana, Prime Minister of Thailand, Prime Minister of Norway, Prime Minister of Nepal, Vice-President of European Commission, and other high-level officials.

In the run up, and during the Mock COP26 event, we had media coverage in over 40 countries, including 30 broadcast interviews, with a reach of over 98 million people.

Across the world, young people are leading the charge on climate action.

Legacy

The Mock COP team also attended COP27: hosting events, co-organising and co-running the Children and Youth Pavilion, joining panel discussions and engaging policy makers with the Mock COP treaty.

Mock COP’s legacy lives on in a number of campaigns, including 1.5 Degrees and Teach the Teacher.
