Biodiversity Literacy Training™ is an excellent interactive course developed by the University of Edinburgh, with the aim of giving participants an understanding of the impacts of human activity on biodiversity, and the capability to act positively to restore nature.
SOS UK are excited to announce that we are licensed by the University of Edinburgh to be able to deliver this training to the HE and FE sector for the 2025-26 academic year!
About Biodiversity Literacy Training™
What the training covers:
- What biodiversity is and why it is important
- The causes and drivers of the biodiversity crisis
- The impacts of everyday activities on biodiversity
- How to restore nature at home and beyond
The training is suitable for a broad audience of staff and students, and does not require prior knowledge, but is rather an educational entry-level course to gain an overall understanding of the biodiversity crisis and how you can take practical actions to help.
What do participants gain?
Through completing the training, participants will gain a basic understanding of the biodiversity crisis, effective ways to restore nature, communication skills for influencing others and a recognized certification.
The training involves the following commitment:
- Completing an online pre-reading course (90 minutes) prior to the training session
- Attending and participating in a 3-hour interactive online workshop delivered by SOS UK
- Filling in a short certification form, which is then sent by SOS UK to the University of Edinburgh to review the forms and certify learners.
How to book
Individual bookings – We are running several open sign-up sessions in Spring Term 2026. This is ideal if you are individually interested or just want to get a smaller number of ~5 staff and students trained at your organization. The price of these individually bookable sessions also includes the £15pp certification fee as well as Eventbrite fees

Institutional bookings – You can also book an online training session specifically for your university or college through SOS UK’s Learning Academy. Simply email learningacademy@sos-uk.org to express initial interest, discuss date availability and proceed with booking this online training, which can be for between 10-20 participants at your institution. The cost is £615+VAT per online training course + £15pp certification fee (total certification cost will depend on how many learners you wish to book for).
