Secondary Geography teaching and climate change

We supported the Teach the Future campaign to carry out research with 480 secondary level Geography teachers in the UK to find out more about the teaching of climate change. We worked with Teacher Tapp, a survey app for teachers, to ask three questions:

  • What positive benefits of climate change are being covered in teaching this academic year?
  • How old are the main course texts being used for teaching of GCSE Geography?
  • What exam boards are teachers following at secondary level Geography?

We found out that:

  • 72% of secondary level Geography teachers say they've covered positive impacts of climate change in their lesson this year
  • The most commonly covered impacts of climate change are that new crops can be grown in previously unsuitable climates (56%), there will be benefits to some animals and plants leading to increased yields in farming (36%) and new shipping routes will open up (36%).
  • 50% of text books used for KS4 / GCSE Geography were published before the UK's declaration of a climate emergency in 2019.
