Our biggest ever Sustainability Summit hits Sheffield!
On Monday 04 November 2019 SOS-UK and NUS held the 9th annual Student Sustainability Summit, at the University of Sheffield Students' Union.
The event brought together 225 student officers and activists to explore, discuss and plan tactics for getting our universities and colleges to go further and faster on sustainability.
Zamzam Ibrahim, NUS and SOS-UK President, gave an inspiring keynote speech in which she explained why she believes it is our education system that is the root cause of why society is so unsustainable, and why we all need to support the Teach the Future campaign. You can read her full speech here.
There were twelve topical workshops led by student officers from around the country, including the pros and cons of working with vs. campaigning against your institution; intersectionality and sustainability; Divest Barclays; getting a job in sustainability; running a successful climate emergency campaign; influencing MPs, peers and Government; working with local authorities on the climate emergency.
The Summit also included a fascinating panel debate on climate justice, and a plenary speech by Joe Brindle, a 15 year old UKSCN activist, in which he encouraged all college and university students to show solidarity with the school strikers.
